Luxury river cruise ships, “made in MV”

MV Werften has developed a new series of luxury river cruise ships called the Rhine class. Two of the four structurally identical ships have already been delivered; the others will be handed over shortly.

MV Werften startet the new series of four identical river cruise ships in 2016 for American cruise line Crystal River Cruises at the shipbuilder`s Wismar site. The first ship – the Crystal Bach –  was delivered last August. Its sister ship – the Crystal Mahler – followed in September. Handover of the last two vessels, the Crystal Debussy and the Crystal Ravel, is plannend for this spring.
The four ships have diesel-electric drives with a pair of on-board aggregates in each of the two engine rooms. E-MS has developed the entire power generation and distribution technology, including the four ships` electric hybrid drives. E-MS also supplied the engineering and mechanical design for the switchboards. By using this technology the generators no longer need to be synchronised. They supply power to the consumers via inverters and a DC link, which saves on fuel. Compared with systems provided on inland vessels until now, the ships` generators operate at two speeds – in normal operation at 1,500 rpm and with increased energy needs at 1,800 rpm. By doing so, an additional 100 kW of energy is produced by each unit.
